In 2019, the West Kootenay Ecosociety (now Neighbours United) began a collaborative effort to encourage all municipalities in the Regional District of Central Kootenay to commit to transitioning to 100% renewable energy by 2050. The Creston Climate Action Society (CCAS) volunteers joined in the initiative.
In 2021, CCAS volunteers made a presentation to the Town of Creston Council, accompanied by a citizens’ petition, requesting the adoption of the resolution. The councilors offered unanimous support, and agreed to develop and adopt the 100% Renewable Kootenays plan by 2022.
Through the work of committed volunteers, community collaboration, and the forward-thinking Town of Creston, we took a positive step towards a transition to renewable energy.
The Regional District of Central Kootenay had signed onto the 100 % Renewal Kootenay Plan in 2019, and by 2023, 12 municipalities had signed the plan as well as the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary.
