Active Transportation

Active Transportation

In July 2021, volunteers began an initiative to encourage a “bike friendly Creston”, inspired by the 100% Renewable Kootenays, with the hope to “help people move beyond the car with public and active transportation”.

The West Kootenay Cycle Coalition was in collaboration.

In March 2022, Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) was contacted with the request for signs “Share the Road”.

In February 2023 – a special member meeting was held which included representation from the RDCK (Paris); Town/Regional Directors; Town representatives, looking at the situation and possible options.

In May 2023 – 3 local routes were chosen which would benefit from reduced speed limits for the protection of cyclists and pedestrians.  Numerous letters and phone calls were made to MoTI, our MLA and our Regional Directors, with no solid results.

In November 2023 – “Share the Road” signs were denied by MoTI at the time but are being considered for their 2025 budget.  Advocacy will continue.

Networking is ongoing with the Creston Cycling Society, West Kootenay Cycling Society, Kootenay Climate Hub, and Creston Chamber of Commerce.
